What is MiCART?

A tornado destroys a local neighborhood.  The site is too dangerous for residents to return.  County Emergency Management may deploy MiCART to the site for pet retrieval.

A winter ice storm interrupts power to a populated area.  People refuse to evacuate to safety because they cannot take their pets.  County Emergency Management may request that MiCART create a temporary shelter for impacted pets or find local resources that can house the animals until power is restored.

MiCART is the Miami County Animal Response Team.  MiCART, a 501c3 non-profit charity, was created in response to the Pets Evacuation Transportation Standards Act of 2006 (PETS Act), which requires that state and local emergency operations plans address the needs of individuals with pets and service animals, as well as the needs of the animals themselves.

MiCART has three main goals:
  • Provide disaster preparedness education to pet owners.
  • Provide disaster response at the request of Miami County Emergency Management.
  • Create a credentialed response team that has the training, equipment and knowledge required to provide animal related disaster recovery.
We cannot do this alone!  MiCART has to be a community effort.  If you are interested in joining MiCART, or would like more information, please visit the Volunteer page.
